Light of Hell’s Gate portrays Bonnet Island Lighthouse at the entrance to Macquarie Harbour on Tasmania’s wild and rugged west coast. The harbour is reached through the narrow channel known as Hell’s Gate - a passage where powerful tides create treacherous conditions for vessels entering the harbour.
As shipping traffic increased during the mining boom of the 1890s, two lights were established in 1891 from white eight-sided wooden towers, one on Entrance Island and the other on Bonnet Island, helping guide vessels safely through the narrow harbour entrance.
In this painting, the gathering storm and turbulent sea amplify the sense of tension and endurance that define the landscape. The lighthouse stands firm amid the chaos, reflecting both the physical reality of the site and the symbolic role lighthouses have long held as beacons of guidance and perseverance in harsh conditions.
