Autumn in Evandale was inspired by Cambrock Lane in Evandale, when the trees turn warm with autumn colours - the whole street looks quite magical. It’s a street I walk most days - sometimes even twice, so it’s become a familiar part of my world.
I wanted to capture that fresh autumn mood, the crunch of leaves that fall onto the road and sidewalk, and also just the feeling of wandering through a street that feels both familiar and charming to me.
I took my reference photo last autumn and somehow finished this painting the following autumn, so this piece has really been a slow walk through the seasons.
The woman in the red coat is a bit of a nod to me - just a small figure moving through all the colour and change. This piece is really about the feeling of autumn in a country town… nostalgic, peaceful and full of charm.
