Painting blind: The visually impaired artist focusing on Tasmanian landscapes | ABC Australia

Story by Sarah Abbott

Vision Beyond Sight; The Unique Perspective of Emerging Artist Kataraina Koroheke

Born in New Zealand and raised amid the captivating landscapes of Tasmania, my art celebrates and reflects the natural beauty that surrounds me, as I’m endlessly drawn to the unique, breathtaking scenes of this island. Where pristine coastlines meet lush farmland, majestic mountains, and sweeping headlands. I’m passionate about capturing the vibrant bushland, bodies of water and unique wildlife in my landscapes.

Though Tasmania’s cool climate brings a crispness to the air, I think it only adds to the island’s charm. The slower pace, tranquil atmosphere, and scenic views are a continuous source of inspiration to me. When the skies over Tasmania come alive with stunning sunsets and dynamic cloud formations, they add an ethereal quality that fuels my creativity and sense of awe.

For me, Tasmania is more than just a place; it’s home, offering a refuge from life’s busyness. Through my art, I hope to convey this sense of peace and renewal, inviting viewers to experience the restorative power of nature within the Tasmanian landscape.

The island’s culture of quality shines through in its handcrafted products, each capturing the natural and unique essence of life here. This spirit of craftsmanship strongly resonates with me, inspiring my own artistic process and making me feel deeply connected to the community.

Despite being legally blind, my visual impairment has heightened my appreciation for Tasmania’s beauty. Living with advanced keratoconus, an inherited condition that distorts my perception of colour and light, presents daily challenges. I work close to the canvas, navigating eyestrain and adjusting to limited vision. Yet, this experience fuels my determination to capture the landscapes I see, turning my unique perspective into art that speaks of resilience and beauty.

Creating art has been my passion since childhood, a constant in my life that has evolved into a therapeutic outlet and a form of meditation. My innate sensitivity and introspective nature find expression on the canvas, allowing me to channel depth of feeling into serene, calming creations that I share with others. My love for animals is also woven into my art, as the presence of these creatures adds another layer of life and beauty to Tasmania’s landscape.

Known for my bright, vibrant colours and skies, my work combines realism with abstract elements. Each piece is a detailed composition where bold, contrasting hues bring energy to familiar landscapes. My style evolved naturally, an organic reflection of my intuitive connection to colour and form. Due to my visual impairment, my process is slow and deliberate, with each painting taking many months to paint, allowing me to immerse myself fully in each creation.

My work has found a home in the hearts of many—from local Tasmanians to art lovers across Australia and in nine countries worldwide. With a Visual Arts Diploma earned through four years at TAFE, I bring formal training and a deep personal connection to each piece, creating art that resonates with an international audience.

I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to share my vision and do what I love. Thank you for taking the time to explore my world through my art. To keep up with my latest works, inspirations, and updates, you can follow my journey on my Facebook art page, Instagram, or by checking my blog on this website. I look forward to sharing more of my world with you!

Warm regards,

Kataraina
